Mosaic Monday: Be Careful Out There

Even though we've had quite a few sunny days lately, it is still very cold, and we're still deeply embedded in snow and ice. Bare patches are beginning to appear here and there, but it's a slow process... In town, there are some heated streets/pavements that are ice free, but you still have to keep watching out for snow and ice falling from above. In other places, you had better look carefully where you put your feet. And the bus drivers are having a tricky time, too!

Ice Sculpture (Follow-Up)

In mid December, an ice sculpture of a polar bear (with a little cub) was made in our town square. Since we've had a such a cold winter, the sculpture is still standing, even if 2½ months of snowing and a bit of occasional thawing in between has altered the shape a little. The picture on the left is from when the sculpture was new. The one on the right is from today.

Ducks

There is not much open water in the river lately for the ducks to play around in, but this dam has become a gathering place.

Two Winter / Summer Comparisons

Two winter/summer collages from the Nature Reserve behind the Mill in yesterday's post.



The bush or tree that you can see between / behind the two trees in the foreground is a hawthorn. The picture to the right is the same hawthorn in September last year.

At the Old Mill

This old mill is situated at a nature reserve not far from where my Dad lives. My brother and I went for a walk there while visiting on 14 February.





The long-lasting cold this winter has created some spectacular snow-and-ice formations in the river behind the mill.

Icicles

As if it wasn't enough that you have to keep your eyes on the ground all the time to watch where you put your feet. Now you have to be constantly aware of danger lurking from above as well!

Another collage from the snowstorm last week. These are all macro flash shots through the window, and the only editing done to them is putting them into a collage (auto-cropped by the Picasa software to fit the chosen format).

Thin Ice

One of the first frosty December mornings, my eye was caught by the intricate pattern of the thin ice on a puddle of rainwater from the previous days of heavy rain.
