I’m doing a different kind of “silly photo” post in my Island of the Voices blog (more of the blooper and guess-what kind), but here in the Picture Book, I thought I’d go back to a visit to the zoo last autumn and do a post that I’ve been thinking of for a while… Using the lyrics to Paul Simon’s At The Zoo.

Someone told me it's all happening at the zoo.

It's a light and tumble journey from the East Side to the park;
Just a fine and fancy ramble to the zoo.
But you can take the crosstown bus if it's raining or it's cold,
And the animals will love it If you do.

The monkeys stand for honesty,
Giraffes are insincere,
And the elephants are kindly but they're dumb.
Orangutans are skeptical of changes in their cages,
And the zookeeper is very fond of rum.
Zebras are reactionaries,
Antelopes are missionaries,
(Pigeons) Penguins plot in secrecy,
And (hamsters) peacocks turn on frequently.
What a gas! You gotta come and see

PS. Since this was an unusually long post for this blog, I’m going to compensate by taking a break for a few days, with the intention of putting some energy into getting my pictures better organized on my hard drive… I’ll be back on this blog on Saturday (if not sooner).

The zoo is one of my favorite places, I could spend hours there.
Great photos of all the animals and the perfect lyrics to go along with them.

define organize when it comes to photos. I keep trying but can't keep up. I LOVE THIS POST. some of it is silly, the things they are doing. this post is good for any day and I can't believe you waited this long to share the zoo. did i say I LOVE IT?

Great zoo shots!! I know the song well, as I'm a big fan of Simon and Garfunkel and just Simon and just Garfunkel. You must listen to Garfunkel's first solo album, if it's still avilable. I can't believe you haven't posted these photos sooner. And I'm looking forward to seing more posts after you've organized your picture folders. That's an ongoing thing with me, and it's getting harder to find stuff. I need to delete more after posting! The rhinos remind me of dominoes, they all look like they are just ever so slightly being knocked over on their sides. And the orangutan looks like she's maybe snuggling a baby! Probably my favorite are the pretty striped antelopes and the peacocks.
Thanks all. I took these photos (and more) at the Zoo back in August last year, which was before I had started the Picture Book blog. I have actually shared a number of zoo-photos before both on my Island of the Voices blog and here, and also on the Soaring Through The World blog. Just not so many different kinds of animals together in one post before.
A nice variety..love the bear knocked out! I haven't been to a zoo for some time. This looks like a really nice home- so green! Cheers-
