The Admiral and the Painted Lady

2010-08-31

Painted Lady - Cynthia Cardui – Tistelfjäril

I was out chasing butterflies in the park again the other day. The Admiral wasn’t very keen on having his photograph taken – he kept his distance. But his Painted Lady friend was quite willing to pose for me with wings spread.

More August Dahlias

DSCN8228

DSCN8209

My mum used to grow dahlias in the garden, and there were always dahlias in bloom for my birthday. Now I’m lucky enough to be able to enjoy them (in all shapes and colours) in one of the parks within walking distance from where I live. (The same park as in the previous three posts.)

The Butterfly Park

Buttefly Park

This is the park that attracts the butterflies. It is divided into different “rooms”.
The pink-blue-white room seemed to be the most popular this past weekend.

Butterflies, flutterbyes… All of a sudden there were a lot of them in the park.
Common Brimstone, Small Tortoiseshell and Peacock Butterflies.

Glad to be able to report the butterflies were “back” in the park yesterday.
The ones in these pictures are Small Tortoiseshell (Nässelfjäril) and Common Brimstone (Citronfjäril). Unfortunately the latter never settle with the wings spread. Hanging from the flowers they’re often hard to distinguish from surrounding leaves. Flying about the males are bright yellow (therefore in Swedish have a name that translates Lemon Butterfly).

Today it’s raining, and I’m playing with the butterflies on the computer instead of in the park.

Love Has Many Names

2010 08 01 Himalayan Balsam-2

Himalayan Balsam – Lat. Impatiens glandulifera – Swe. Jättebalsamin

Other English names I found for it:
Indian Balsam, Kiss-me-on-the-mountain… or Policeman’s helmet!
I guess whoever came up with the last one wasn’t really the romantic type… ;)

Although, as I write that down, I’m suddenly reminded of a Jeeves & Wooster novel by P.G. Wodehouse, in which the heroine wanted her fiancé to prove his love for her by stealing a policeman’s helmet…! (With no end of complications, of course.)

The Garden, At Last

2009-08-02 garden fence

The Garden in the Museum park, surrounded by a traditional wooden fence.

2009-08-02 garden waterfall and pool

An artificial waterfall runs down the hill from the park to a lake below.
On the right a piece from last years open air exhibition – a “pool of tears”
(made from broken glass) hidden among the trees in the Garden.

“Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden, and there he put the man he had formed. --- A river watering the garden flowed from Eden, and from there it divided…”
~Genesis 2:8, 10~

“Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. No longer will there be any curse.”
~The Book of Revelation 22:1-3~

Gate to the Secret Garden - ‘Seed’

2010 08 01 Gates Exhibition_Seed 1

The Dream of the Secret Garden - ‘Seed’

He told them another parable: "The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all your seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and perch in its branches."

Matthew 13:31-32

This post is the 9th in a series that started last Monday, 9 August.
Tomorrow, we enter the Garden.

The Dream of the Secret Garden - ‘Live Rust’

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
~ Matthew 6:19-21 ~

Gate to the Secret Garden - ‘Skanseninspiration’

2010 08 01 Gates Exhibtion_Skansen 1

The Dream of the Secret Garden - ‘Skanseninspiration’

This is one of the gates at an outdoor exhibition of gates this summer in our museum park.

While the buildings in the museum park are all old ones, the gates in this exhibition are all new creations.  A number of artists were asked to make their own Dream Gate.

As it happens, the shared photo blog Soaring Through The World In Pictures, where I’ve been a member for about a year now, happens to have Fences and Gates as theme this week. So starting yesterday, I decided to share one gate per day on that blog. I did however also decide that I want to collect them all on this blog as well; I’ll just try not show the same gate on both blogs on the same day.

I’m starting here today with one gate that will not be appearing on the other blog (there were a couple of more gates in the exhibition than there are days of the week).

The name “Skansen-inspiration” refers (I think!) to a more well-known open air museum than ours: Skansen in our capital Stockholm, which also has a collection of old buildings .

I took more than one picture of most of the gates, and also of the name plates belonging to each one of them; and so I made one collage for each gate, showing it from different angles. In some of the pictures of the name plates, you will see my camera reflected ;) and also evidence of the fact that even though the sun was shining when I took the pictures, it had been raining earlier!

I hope you’ll enjoy the exhibition. I did!

A Taste Of Summer

2010 08 01 Red Currants 3

clusters of red, the hedges are full of them,
red-currant red, a graceful
ornament or a merry smile.”

Peek-a-boo!

2010 08 04 aglais urticae

“Now you see me… Now you don’t…”

Earlier this week I was complaining I didn’t see any colourful butterflies around this summer. The next day, I caught sight of this one – a Small Tortoiseshell (Lat. Aglais urticae, Sw. Nässelfjäril).

Can you see it in the bottom righthand corner? Pretty well camouflaged with its wings folded, isn’t it…

17th Century Church

DSCN7803-1   DSCN7834-1

 DSCN7811-1   DSCN7810-1

The old church in the museum park, with bell tower and gate. The church is from the end of the 17th century, but like all the other buildings in the museum park it is not in its original site but was moved here from somewhere else. (They are all from the local area around here though.)

 DSCN1713-1   DSCN1752-1

Last year the bell tower was being repaired, then the roof was on the ground and I was able to get a close-up photo of it! - My photo of the interior of the church is from last year, too. The church is popular for weddings and also used for other occasional church services.

DSCN7841 DSCN7842 DSCN7843

The light conditions were a bit tricky this day, very sharp contrasts between light and shadow. Almost for the first time, I experimented a little with manual setting of exposure… Hmmm. I shall have to practice this a bit more, I think!

The “thing” you see out on the lawn there is a gate which is part of an outdoors art exhibition this summer – Gates, the Dream of the Secret Garden. These are not old gates, but new ones, made especially for the exhibition. I intend to show more of those next week (also at Soaring Through the World, where Fences and Gates is the theme for next week).
